refinish furniture?

I want to upgrade my entertainment center and oak computer desk. It is solid oak with a gloss medium. I would like to upgrade to more modern look and paint or stain with black paint / stain. How can I do this without the hassle of separation of the last track and start from scratch? Any help out there? Thank you
