How to get video games (video games for most computers) on your laptop / PC?

I was wondering if anyone how video games can be transferred to your laptop. I have some that were given to me by friends and wonders how to obtain them. Is there a place where you can download onto your laptop computer or what. Or can you put games on CD-ROM (eg, FIFA 09, DOC, etc.) on your laptop?? How do I much appreciate it. Cheers,
