What makes a laptop screen flicker and what are the fixes?

I have seen forums that discuss battery problems, backlights and backlight inverters. What has been your experience with this problem and how did you fix it? I removed my battery and the problem seems to have disappated. Should I get a new battery? Where are the test points to check battery fully charged voltage? Do the battery contacts ever get corroded. I have an HP Pavilion N5445 laptop. Like I said, the screen is not flickering right now or at least not as noticeably as when I have the battery in. I thought I had a virus or spyware. Not so sure now, maybe a combo though?

Dude maybe it's a hardware problem but you haven't looked at the software side. If your screen refresh rate is too low, you will see flicker. Right click an empty area on your desktop and click properties. Click the Settings Tab (top row of tabs) on the Display Properties window and then click Advanced, click Monitor and make sure your refresh rate is set to 60. Also, make sure you have the latest drivers for your monitor and video card (or integrated video chip on motherboard).
