HOW DO I GET THE BACKLIGHT ON MY LAPTOP TO STAY ON WITHOUT HAVING IT PLUGGED IN?

I HAVE A DELL COMPUTER WITH WINDOWS VISTA. MY BACK LIGHT ONLY COMES ON WHEN I AM CHARGING THE COMPUTER OTHERWISE IT IS NOT AS BRIGHT. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY THIS IS? ARE LAPTOPS SUPPOSE TO ONLY HAVE THE BACK LIGHT ON WHEN IT IS BEING CHARGED?

It comes set that way so that your monitor doesn't suck up all of the battery power using it to make the screen brighter.

To fix/adjust this, go to Control Panel > Change Battery Settings(Control Panel Home) or Power Options(Classic View) > Change Plan Settings > Drag the "Adjust display brightness" to the left to make it dimmer or to the right to make it brighter > Save Changes

And you're all set. I recommend that you make your own custom power settings so that you have your most comfortable options set, and when you really want to save power you can switch to the computer default options.
