Toughbooks are too expensive because of its "hardened shell" - so you do not get as a team with another brand. Of course, since you're shopping specifically for a Toughbook, you probably need that. If you want to maximize your performace on an old machine, I suggest you abandon Windows and installing an easy to use Linux as Ubuntu - comes with OpenOffice, which is virtually identical to MSWord (and is 100% compatible with MS Word files).
