External hard drive damage and LCD computer monitor?

I just got a portable external hard drive on my laptop, and today I put on my laptop for several hours, both the notebook screen and external disk. When I returned to my computer and opened the lid, the screen darkened significantly. I tried to close the lid completely to put in standby mode, and open in my profile. Sign on the screen was normal, and when I got to my profile is normal for about 1 second before flickering and dimming again. I restarted the computer and now the screen looks great, but I wanted to know if my external hard drive may be why the screen of my doing. Anyone know?

I do not think it will cause permanent damage to the LCD. But have a HD with the exception of solid state drive near the television monitor, or magnets .. Such as loudspeakers that contain magnets. This is not good for the screen or HD. This can cause permanent damage to a CRT or television.
