Wxga Lcd Cable

How will my old DVDs and regular television look on an HDTV?
For Christmas, I am getting an Emerson 19'' LCD HDTV. I don't know much technical information about TVs, but here are some specifications listed: Resolution is 1440 * 900 (WXGA +), Brightness is 250 cd/m squared, and contrast ratio is 800:1. I really don't know what all that means. Here is my question. I will be using this HDTV to watch regular cable and my old, non-HD, non-BluRay DVDs on a regular DVD player. I have heard that the old stuff can look bad on newer TVs with better technology. Is this true? Will my current DVDs and cable look bad on my new TV?
I forgot to mention that the new TV is widescreen, if that changes anything.
I doubt you'll notice any difference on a 19" screen but yes on larger HD screens the image can look worse than on a similar size crt due to poor upscaling.
